Rochester Institute of Technology's Peer to Peer: Challenging Extremism winners of the federal government global university challenge are headed to the popular South by Southwest (SXSW) conference and festival in Austin, Texas.
It's Time: ExOut Extremism co-CEO Olivia Hauck '16 (advertising and public relations)
from Irondequoit, N.Y., will be participating as a panelist, and co-CEO Jessica Kellner '16 (new media marketing) from Honeoye Falls, N.Y., will be in attendance at the SXSW conference, which runs from March 10-19.
Taking Back the Internet: Countering Extremism is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon on March 11. Hauck will join panelists Matthew Rice, acting chief digital officer at the U.S. Government's Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) task force housed at the Department of Homeland Security, and Monika Bickert, head of product policy at Facebook. The group will be joined by moderator Sean Ferrell, senior vice president of EdVenture Partners, facilitator of the P2P program.
The panelists will focus on the development of public-private partnerships to facilitate and scale public-led campaigns against prejudice, online hate and extremism, including ISIS.
Peer to Peer: Challenging Extremism (P2P) is a partnership among Facebook, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and EdVenture Partners.
In developing their winning social media campaign at RIT, the ExOut Extremism team of 17 students, led by Adriana Bóveda-Lambie, assistant professor of marketing at Saunders College of Business, worked with the Muslim community of Rochester, N.Y., and helped to promote their ideas of fighting terrorism by empowering the silent majority through Facebook and other platforms.
