The Management Information Systems (MIS) program at RIT's Saunders College of Business has advanced to #6 nationally in the College Factual 2019 Best Colleges ranking. This represents a significant move for the program, after being ranked #10 three years in a row as recognized by the USA Today College Guide. The program sits at the intersection business and technology, where business students get an RIT Edge in technology resources and expertise.
MIS is one of eleven undergraduate disciplines at Saunders College. It is the most popular business major at RIT, with enrollment increasing more than 60% over the past four years. The program has been noted for an applied curriculum, the latest technology resources and access to world-class employers. MIS career paths typically blend technology with high levels of teamwork and personal interaction in the workplace, bridging the gap between business and technology roles, and resulting in a wide array of leadership positions.
“The MIS program’s continued recognition in the College Factual rankings is very gratifying," said Sean Hansen, department chair and professor of MIS, marketing and digital business. "I am incredibly proud of our world-class faculty, who see this acknowledgement as a testament to the hard work and innovative outlook of our talented students and alumni. They are making substantive impacts in organizations across the industrial spectrum through the design, implementation, and application of technologies that enhance the lives of business professionals.”
Employers in recent years have included Southwest Airlines, Intuit (makers of QuickBooks), Constant Contact, GE, as well as professional sports franchises like the Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Binghamton Senators. Maria Richart, Director of RIT Career Services & Cooperative Education stresses, “MIS has been a very popular program for our students and even more so for employers. We simply cannot graduate enough MIS majors to meet the demand as evidenced by the premium in salaries MIS hires are starting at.”
"We are excited to see our programs growing reputation and exceptional rankings," said Saunders College Dean Jacqueline Mozrall. "Our MIS program continues to gain recognition as organizations understand the importance of integrating technology and analytics to support business operations. We continue to strive to provide our students with ever-evolving learning experiences created through our contemporary curriculum and internship programs."
In addition to undergraduate business programs, Saunders College graduate programs regularly receive top rankings. Fueled by the nationally recognized MIS Program, the new MS in Business Analytics also delivers excellence at the intersection of business and technology. All Saunders programs benefit from a shared foundation in technology, including access to the Sklarsky Center for Business Analytics, where students across all business disciplines leverage Bloomberg Terminals as well as a suite of analytics software, including Tableau and R.
A strong entrepreneurial culture and a powerful minors program that spans all nine RIT Colleges put business students side-by-side with students in science, technology, engineering, arts, design and mathematics. These experiences often lead to entrepreneurial ventures through classroom activities such as The Freshman Experience: Biz 1-+2 program, or through competitions and activities that include Tiger Tank, Saunders Startup, The Construct rapid prototyping lab, and the RIT Venture Creation incubator.
As MIS at RIT continues to build a strong network with employers and its alumni, we are excited to receive additional recognition as we continue to develop our offerings across a multitude of industries.
