Real World Experience for Saunders Financial Management Association

The Financial Management Association (FMA) club from Saunders College of Business at RIT completed their 7th Adirondack Cup Competition- a 6-month, stock picking challenge sponsored by Adirondack Research and Management Inc. They competed against 26 teams from other northeast colleges, building small-cap portfolios by investing a hypothetical $1 million.

This year’s competition was fierce- with the winning team from Skidmore College posting a 48.75 percent return and an index gain of 3.24 percent. This was only the second time that returns beat the Russell 2000 Index and Skidmore broke the outperformance record of the competition.

The Adirondack Cup Competition provides students interested in investment field the opportunity to try their hand at investing. Teams completed research in the fall before investing their budget into five small-cap stocks. Teams were then required to have industry diversification and were allowed only one chance throughout the completion to make changes to their portfolio.

Saunders encourages participation in competitions like The Adirondack Cup because it is an excellent experiential learning opportunity. Working on a project that gives students the opportunity to enhance their professional skills sets them apart from other graduates.

Saunders commends the FMA club for their participation in The Adirondack Cup Competition!
