Saunders Student Serving as Ambassador to Beijing Jiaotong University, as Inter-school Exchange Grows

April 7, 2017

The latest development from the Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) new global campus, RIT China, is the launch of a new Student Ambassador program. Sponsored by RIT Global, the Spring 2017 semester is the first time the program has existed between the two campuses.

Megan Cornelius, a senior Accounting and MIS double major, is spending her semester at the BJTU Weihai campus, taking courses and working with Management Information Systems (MIS) students to set up a student government, as well as a protocol for establishing clubs. Concurrently, she will assist students in understanding cultural differences and in practicing their English language skills.

“I wish to accomplish many things by the end of my time at BJTU,” noted Cornelius. “Personally, I hope to be able to have a fluent conversation in Chinese with others at the school. I hope to feel confident enough with speaking Chinese to be able to travel around on my own.” Cornelius added that both her work and studies thus far have been both challenging and rewarding.

After the semester concludes, the two universities will continue to grow the mutual academic exchange that has been fostered – even during the summer. Following the success of last year’s visit, another group of BJTU Management Information Systems students from BJTU are set to visit Rochester between the spring and fall semesters.

More than 50 BJTU students were welcomed at the RIT Rochester campus in 2016 for a summer cultural and language immersion. Stanley Van Horn, (English Language Center director) and Lyndsey McGrath (director of global programs and international partnerships) facilitated the summer session at RIT; the program was sponsored by both RIT Global and the Saunders College of Business. During the two-week program, this first cohort of MIS students from BJTU’s Weihai campus toured RIT and the local area, allowing the students to experience U.S. culture and apply their English language skills before returning to China.

Saunders College and BJTU are endeavoring to keep providing students and faculty a platform to engage in international opportunities that foster a rich exchange of ideas, culture, and information.

2017’s summer trip will expand upon the first year, and engage the students in a business workshop covering a variety of business disciplines, including entrepreneurship. At the conclusion of the workshop, the BJTU students will participate alongside all RIT students in the University’s 2017 Undergraduate Research Symposium in August.
